  Erwin Fässler’s Genealogy Tour was the Highlight of Our Week!
Tour Date: 29 May 2024 Location: Nuglar-St Pantaleon and Gempen in Schwarzbubenland, Solothurn Canton How many people on tour: four – my husband, two adult daughters, and me At the end of last month, my family and I traveled to Switzerland for a celebratory holiday. Mostly, we wanted to experience the beauty of Switzerland’s geography and learn a bit about its history and contemporary culture. I also wanted to spend a day visiting a couple of small towns where my Burtschi ancestors were from. When I first reached out to Erwin, I told him it would be amazing if we could just see the inside of St Pantaleon church. We did that and so much more!! The tour preparations started about a month or so before our trip. I found Erwin through Trip Advisor (thank you to the other reviewers) and then sent him (per his website’s instructions) an email about the towns I was hoping to tour and the research I’d done so far. Erwin and I traded several emails and had at least two phone conversations before meeting for the tour. Erwin puts extensive work into preparing for these tours. After we agreed to the scope of his research in Switzerland, he went to the Staatsarchiv Solothun (the Solothrun archives) and completed more research for me. He sent detailed notes and copies of the documents he found before our tour. The day of the tour was simply fantastic and my family’s favorite part of our week in Switzerland!! We met other Burtschi descendants (Martin, Stefan, and Benjamin Burtschi) and spent the day with them, touring the area’s historical landmarks and gorgeous countryside. Erwin even arranged for my family to meet Nuglar’s mayor, Daniel Baumann, who generously showed us around the newly constructed spielplatz (which was substantially funded by another Burtschi’s testamentary legacy) and the primarschule, where generations of Burtschis have studied. The whole day was wonderful but other standout moments Erwin facilitated include: Lunch hosted by Stefan – was so nice getting to know the Burtschis who still live in the Nuglar area, and it was amazing to have a chance to look at their genealogy records, family trees, local maps, and history books. St Pantaleon Church – the main Catholic parish church of Nuglar-St Pantaleon. The site has had a church on it since at least the 13th century. The current church dates from reconstruction in 1823. We also visited the church’s graveyard and the grave of Anna Rosa Burtschi-Mangold. Erwin shared a bit about Switzerland’s churches, its religious history, and the country’s burial customs. Both the church and its graveyard were beautifully maintained. St Wendelin’s Chapel – a small chapel in Nuglar beside the primary school. A chapel was built on this site in the early 1700s and extensively renovated in 1875 when a new altar was consecrated in honor of St Wendelin. This chapel is maintained by the community and is still in use today by both the Roman Catholic Church and the Protestant Reformed Church. Gempen Tower – Steel tower with small observation platform at the top. It rises nearly one hundred feet from its perch on the side of a mountain overlooking the Basel region. It was rainy and cloudy when we went but the weather made the mountains look atmospheric and dramatic. The view was spectacular! A 360-degree panorama of the Jura Mountains and the borders of France, Germany, and Switzerland. Herrenberg Brewery – a small cooperative brewery in Nuglar that is in the town’s former milk house. Martin Burtschi founded this brewery with other townspeople who have a passion for brewing great beer. We sampled a half-dozen beers, including Munni Spez, Kloster Bier, Chämmi Fäger, Dudel Sack (aka Bagpipe), and specialty beers like Vollmond and Holunder, which is made with elderberries grown and harvested in Nuglar. All of them were delicious! At the end of the day, we said goodbye to Erwin, and then Benjamin treated us to Rivella and Coke at Restaurant Rebstock. Martin shared a bit more history and I exchanged contact information with Stefan and promised to stay in touch. Erwin followed up the next day with tons of photos, more records, and final emails. If you are looking for a Swiss tour guide, I highly recommend Erwin Fässler! He was professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. His joy at being able to show us some of the smaller towns in northern Switzerland and connect us with Swiss relatives who live in the same area where our shared ancestor was from is obvious. I wish there was an Erwin Fässler in every country! Tips: Do as much genealogical research as you can before reaching out to Erwin. That will help narrow the places for additional research and tour sites, so the day of your tour can be productive and fun. Payment can be made via bank transfer. Communication via What’s App and email. Everyone spoke English very well, but Erwin is fluent in both Swiss German and English if there are instances when a more complicated explanation is needed. For menus, signs, records, book pages, and written words, I used Google Translate. The Swiss people were so friendly and welcoming! Would love to visit again someday!

  Erwin Tours of Switzerland Helps Find My Glarner Roots, Meet Distant Cousins, and Enjoy the Beauty of Switzerland
My wife and I had a wonderful experience with Erwin Fässler, Proprietor of Erwin Tours, in April of 2024. We are experienced, independent travelers, in our 70s. After arriving from the USA, we drove from Amsterdam and arranged to stay in Lucerne. Erwin provided a wonderful genealogy experience in Canton Glarus. He significantly enhanced our Switzerland experience and also served as our guide and translator. Our experience began with a referral and contact to www.erwintours.ch. Within a few days, Erwin arranged a planning call to review what we hoped to accomplish, gain some familiarity with us, and confirm timelines. We identified the locations we wanted to see, shared my Swiss heritage lineage, and sent some family photos to him. Our first day with Erwin was a Wow! He introduced us to a cousin in Elm, complete with documents to show the generational connection. We had a fantastic day, meeting people, seeing their homes and farms, and enjoying the magnificent beauty of the area. On the second day we went to Ennenda and saw the church and school where my grandfather attended. Another Wow followed when Erwin connected with residents at a small café, and after showing them our forty-year-old picture, they took us immediately to the house where my grandfather lived in the early 1900s. We provided the photo and Erwin did the rest. Erwin is knowledgeable, personable, trustworthy, and a joy to interact with. He is very hard-working and spent many hours preparing. He graciously adjusted the nine-hour trip he had quoted us in our initial phone call and spent two days with us at our request. Erwin made each day memorable and documented them with several excellent photos he subsequently sent to us.

It's the passion of Erwin that makes your day. Yes, he's Swiss but with more knowledge of Bollywood than me. His conversations take you by surprise. The locations he takes you to is a dreamland. I've known him for almost 10 years now, and we've shared our life stories. This is the most fascinating man you'll ever meet in Switzerland. He calls it Simran land because he's such a Bollywood fan.   Highlight of our Swiss sojourn!
We were fortunate to book Erwin for a DDLJ Bollywood day tour from Interlaken and it was absolutely our best tour in our one month in Europe. Erwin is so passionate and knowledgeable that the day just wasn’t long enough. Apart from nailing the stunning set locations from our favourite Bollywood flicks there was just so much more that we experienced and learnt from Erwin - be it the history of Switzerland, food, culture, you name it and all done in comfort and through conversation that just flowed naturally.
